ANOTHER APPROACH I USE
EMDR
Distressing memories. A way to process them.
EMDR is a psychotherapeutic method for working with distressing memories. Whether it is appropriate for you depends on your situation and careful preparation.
Request an initial consultationTHE METHOD
Working with memories. Easing their impact today.
EMDR stands for “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing”. While attention is directed towards a distressing memory, alternating stimulation is applied to both sides, for example through guided eye movements.
Treatment involves more than eye movements: taking a history, preparation, targeted processing, careful closure and reviewing progress. How and when a memory can be addressed is decided individually.
EMDR is among the well-researched trauma-focused treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder. This does not mean it is appropriate for every difficulty. Before treatment, we assess whether my services or other specialist care are suitable.

YOUR QUESTIONS
Before your first appointment.
Do I need to remember the event?
In EMDR, attention is directed towards distressing memory content and associated reactions. What is needed for the work is discussed during preparation.
Can treatment be distressing?
Working with memories can bring up emotions and physical reactions. Preparation, an individually paced approach and careful closure are therefore essential.
Can EMDR be used for other concerns?
EMDR is also used outside PTSD treatment. The evidence and suitability vary according to the concern; both should be discussed specifically.
